Murano The art and science of lampwork bead making is rich in history, especially glassmaking in Venice, Italy or Murano, a small group of islands within the city. Between 1860 and 1960 the glass producing companies located on the Murano islands rose to world leadership in the production of decorative glass objects. This was the second time that Murano attained this pinnacle; the first time was over 500 years prior. Glassmaking existed in the lagoon of Venice as early as the eighth century. In the ensuring centuries, the area became the focal point of glassmaking in the world as Venice became an international commercial center. Around 1290, the glassmakers were banned from Venice, perhaps for one or both of the following reasons; the fear the fires of the glass furnaces created a danger in crowded Venice or to prevent the glassblowers from sharing their unique and valuable skills with foreigners. Regardless of the reason, Murano is considered as the focal point of knowledge of glassmaking and lampwork artistry and techniques. Therefore, lampwork beads from Murano are considered some of the best in the world and are featured in my designs offered below. Midnight Sky This unusual 28” adjustable necklace with large oral brushed sterling silver chain links features a 2” long by 1” wide large Murano tear drop bead with swirls of sky blue, lime green, orange and hints of lavender. There are four (4) – ½” round Murano black beads, each with matching swirls of sky blue and pink. These unique Murano beads are accented with black Swarovski crystals. This necklace is ideal for wearing over a black cashmere sweater.

Hot Coals These dangling earrings feature a one inch round Murano black bead with swirls of fire red and gold that give the effect of “hot coals”.
